how many licenses required for g729?

Postby AJ » Fri Feb 26, 2010 9:15 pm

Hi,

Hopefully someone who understands the nature of a predictive dialer can help with this. Can anyone tell me how many licenses for g729 I'd need on, say a 25 seat system. I understand that Asterisk can do g729 pass through at no cost, such as to a SIP provider of g729. However, if I have a SIP provider offering me a capacity of 100 circuits and Asterisk is dialing out on them, sometimes getting answering machines, sometimes setting up a call and passing it to an agent... what are your thoughts on license requirements of seats vs. circuits?

thank.... AJ

vicidial is not a "pass-thru". (and i've never heard of a "pass-thru" license exception)

if you want to have a 100 circuit capacity on your vicidial server, you'll need 100 licenses. but be careful, we've had issues with high capacity (over 50 g729) licenses on one machine in use at the same time. not to mention the CPU hit after you reach that level. g729 uses A FREAKIN LOT of cpu.

if you want less than 100, because you don't think you'll use them all, you have to have some idea of how many lines you will be dialing per agent maximum. each list, room, campaign is different in that regard. it can range far and wide (1:1 to 100:1!). ordinarily, a decent campaign will run at about 2:1.

if your agents are ALSO on g729, don't forget to take them into account.

25 agents + 50 calls = 75. but there are other factors involved.

You can buy licenses for G729 codec translation on Asterisk from Digium or Howler Technologies

Can i ask your method of installation (& OS) and where you acquired your g729?

Also: are you running apache/mysql/asterisk all on one box?

Also: do you have any telephony cards or other hardware installed (aside from a NIC!)

Sure no problem..

I had a consultant put these together but below are the specs

4x servers with Fedora core 8
2x Servers with Opensuse 11

Both have the gui running as i do not know linux well

g.729 was purchased from digium - 600 channels / 100 per box

Core 2 Quad Q6600 processors in the Fedora servers
Phenom 2 BE 2.66Ghz cpu's in the Opensuse boxes

All servers have 4GB corsair / Ocz ram and 160gb hard drives.

No hardware is installed - We are running strictly sip -
Using Ztdummy i believe for timing.

Load average is around 1.5 to 3.00 under load.

Each server is independent, each having asterisk/ apache and mysql

my method of testing has been watching the cli and making 99 calls to my regular campaign and 1 call to my cell phone or pots line. Havent had a problem running all the calls simultaneously.

I run into errors like .... to many files open before i hit a high load average. From what i have learned the too many open files error is a result of the ulimit.

How do you get to 125 channels on a box when you only purchased 100 per box? Or did you mean 125 channels on one campaign spread across multiple servers ... but you said they are all independent ...

My experience has been that when you exceed licensed (purchased) g729 ... you get cut off quite cleanly. Did I read something wrong?

standard vicibox contains the commands necessary to raise ulimit during vicidial startup

Interesting. I may have to look into load comparisons with stability in mind between OpenSuse, Gentoo and Ubuntu and see if there is a disparity. If OpenSuse will hold a higher level of g729 ... of course, now I have to see who has 100 licenses on ONE box hm ... (you have 125 licenses on your TEST box? wow)

Unless i am droping calls and i dont know it i havent seen any issues. I only know how to test the way i stated before. As a matter of fact matt has worked on one of these servers but it was some time ago.

i didnt just start with 125 channels... it was a progression because i was told to look for high load averages to find the limit per box.

I dont know linux and my goal was to get as many channels per box possibe so that if the consultant every took off i could still make calls at some capacity.

knowing what i know now i wouldhave done it differently
