Ubuntu is very different from Slackware. I cannot tell you what is different from the standpoint of a VICIDIAL install since I have never tried it. Make sure you don't have Xwindows(Gnome or KDE) loaded though.

Ubuntu, is like Debian (not exactly tough).
Does KDE or Gnome provide any kind of incompatibilities to the equation?

No it doesn't. However, you don't need to install those desktop environments since it has nothing to do with Vicidial. Kinda waste of disk space and resources. :D

There's a little more to not wanting Xwindows(KDE/Gnome) on your server, it hurts audio quality if you are actively using KDE/Gnome while trying to dial at the same time. Too much CPU usage and priprity is usually given to the GUI at the expense of Asterisk.

if you make a lamp-server installation of ubuntu, and then make shore that you got right kernel installed and make. Then you can follow scratch install from "SUBPHASE 3.2: Installing Perl Modules" and below. All programs in 3.3.1-3.3.14 you can install with apt-get if you want, but not "PHASE 4: INSTALLING ASTERISK" where you need to install manual.

good luck

Hi,

As I'm new to all this I've been working on an install document for Vicidial on a base install of Unbuntu. As I resolve the mistakes I make I make a note of them.

The bulk of the Debian install notes work without any issues but so far I've found I need to do the following extra steps.

I found that when I didn't install the kernel image and headers Zapte had a hard time installing so as soon as te OS finishes it's install I ran the following.

***Starts***

12. Check which kernel you are running by typing “uname –r”

13. Once you know which kernel you are running get the latest images and required header files. Match the version numbers below with the results from running “uname –r”.
13.1. "apt-get install linux-image-2.6.20-15-server linux-headers-2.6.20-15-server"

***Ends***

Prior to running the cpan configuration I ran the following so that lynx and ncftp were installed and found by cpan.

***Starts***

Type “apt-get install lynx”
Type “apt-get install ncftp”

***Ends***

The document isn't finished but when it is I'll post for anyone who wants a look
